Your Vote Counts

One vote saved Andrew Johnson from impeachment in 1868. California, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon were all added to the Union by only one vote. History proves that every vote counts!

Exercising your right to vote is one of the most effective ways to have an impact in your community. You can utilize this right in just a few weeks. On Tuesday, September 9th our polling places will open their doors for the primary election.

However, thousands of Central New Yorkers in Onondaga County are unable to vote because they are not registered. Unfortunately, it is too late to register for the primary election, but it is not too late to register for the general election. All it takes is just a few simple steps. You can obtain a voter registration form by calling my office at 428-7632 or by calling the Board of Elections at 435-8683. You may also print a form from the following web site: www.elections.state.ny.us.

In order to vote in the upcoming general election your registration application must be postmarked no later than October 10. You may also register in person at the Onondaga County Board of Elections up until October 24.

If you were at one time a registered voter, but have not voted in the past five years, or if you have moved to a new address since you last voted, you must reregister. Also, if you know you will be out of town on the day of the election, or if you are unable to get to the polls because of a health condition or illness, you can exercise your right to vote by an absentee ballot. All you have to do is complete an application and the ballot will be mailed to you.

Your opinions as a registered voter do matter. By voting you help choose the individuals at the local, state, and national levels of government who will make decisions that impact your life, and the lives of your family, friends and neighbors.

Our government has remained strong throughout history because it is based on the fair and democratic election of our representatives. As countries across the world struggle to maintain or fight for their democracy we, as New Yorkers and Americans, have an obligation to preserve our democracy by participating in the democratic process. By casting a ballot you can help to shape the future of your town or village, your county, New York State and our nation.
